Understanding the service
Enteral feeding support helps adults who receive nutrition, fluids or medicines through a PEG, RIG or NG tube. The prescribed regime is set by a dietitian or clinician; the role of care staff is to follow it accurately, care for the tube site, watch for problems and record what happened. The regime itself is never changed independently.

Support is commonly arranged after a hospital admission where feeding has been established, where swallowing has become unsafe and a tube has been placed, or where a family managing feeds and overnight pumps needs trained assistance or respite. What Care Circle can provide
Support may include setting up and administering prescribed feeds, flushing, tube-site observation and cleaning, giving medicines by the tube where that route is authorised and instructions exist, fluid and output monitoring, safe positioning and aspiration precautions, pump and equipment checks, and clear records of every feed given.
Nothing below is offered automatically. Each element is included only where the assessment, written clinical instructions and Care Circle’s registered scope support it, and where a professional assessed as competent for that task is available.
How the service is planned
Before care begins, Care Circle reviews the dietetic regime, tube type and placement details, flushing instructions, medicine routes, supply and replacement arrangements, and the pathway to follow if the tube blocks or comes out. Positioning and aspiration risk are assessed with the person's mobility and swallowing status in mind.
Care Circle works, with consent, with the person, family, dietitian, GP, pharmacy, specialist nutrition or enteral-feeding nurses, speech and language therapist, hospital and commissioner to maintain one clear feeding and escalation plan.
The professionals involved
Registered nurses and competency-assessed support workers deliver the plan under nurse oversight. Staff do not replace, reposition or use a tube beyond their assessed competence and written authorisation. Where a task requires a specialist nutrition nurse or dietitian, it is referred rather than absorbed.
Competence is specific
A qualification or registration does not authorise every task. Care Circle matches professionals to the interventions written into the plan, and reassesses when needs, equipment or instructions change.
Safety, monitoring and escalation
Feeds, flushes, medicines, fluid balance and site condition are recorded at each visit. The plan describes the response to suspected aspiration, tube displacement or blockage, site redness or leakage, vomiting and interrupted feeding, including escalation and emergency thresholds. Concerns are communicated to the dietetic or specialist nursing team promptly.
